20 Things to do in Hokkaido Attractions & Places to Visit Ultimate Guide

In late November Hokkaido has begun to snow, the best winter period to travel would be November until February. However, where to go and what to do? Let me introduce you the hottest spots, latest attractions and best things to do in Hokkaido, the northern main Islands of Japan, famous in snow, volcanoes, natural hot springs and ski activities.

Some of you might curious about the definition between Sapporo and Hokkaido, Sapporo is one of the major city within Hokkaido, same to other cities like Hakodate, Asahikawa and Obihiro.

1. Go to top of Mount Hakodate (函馆山) by cable car or walking, see one of the World’s most beautiful night view which equal to the Hong Kong mountain views.
2. Take photo with incredible gem ices in Toyokoro Otsu Coast (大津丰子郎海岸), very amazing phenomenon you must see, gem stone on the beach!

8. Go to Lake Toya (洞爷湖) in Shikotsutoya National Park, soak hot spring while the sky full of snowflakes and enjoy the snow view.

10. Go up Tenguyama (天狗山) by TENGU cable car, have a great dinner in Otaru Tengu Tei Restaurant and enjoy the awesome night views.
11. Visit Otaru Music Box Museum (小樽音乐盒博物馆), purchase iconic music boxes as souvenir for your friends & family.
12. Go to Shiroi Koibito Park (白恋人), a wonderful and romantic spot for couples. Enjoy the Magical Factory Tour for chocolate and cookies, or make your own unique sweet treats at the Dream Kitchen.
13. Take Sapporo Streetcar (Tram), enjoy the scenery of Japanese city, its a good way to calm your mind.
14. Visit Fushimi Inari Shrine (伏见稻荷大社) in Sapporo, take photo and walk through 27 torii gates leading to the shrine.
15. Go to JR Tower Observatory T38 (JR塔展望室T38), stand on 38th floor 360-degree observation deck overlook whole Sapporo city.
16. Visit Asahiyama Zoo (旭山动物园) in Asahikawa, the coolest zoo in Japan when northern polar bear meet southern penguin in same place. Find and take photo with polar bear, penguin, seal, hippo and giraffe.
17. Visit Hokkaido University (北海道大学), a popular tourist attraction, take photo with these Meiji period ancient buildings and beautiful snow scene.
18. Join the Shikotsuko Lake Festival (支笏湖冰涛祭), one of the greatest winter festival in Japan. Take photo with many huge ice sculptures and ice buildings that illuminated by colorful lights at night, very the beautiful . This event starting from late January until mid February every year.
19. Go to Jigokudani (地狱谷) also called as Hell Valley, a volcanic hot springs with walking path, located above Noboribetsu Onsen. 20 minutes walk through the valley to the Oyunuma and feel the 50 degree celcius sulfurous pond, by the way you can enjoy natural foot bath along the way.
20. Visit Tsurumidai (鹤居村) in Akan, see the spectacular scene, combination of big snow white World and hundreds of red-crowned crane, the rarest cranes in the World. Folk rumors: If you see it, good luck will come to you.
